Remember the Alamo
A hundred and eighty were challenged by Travis to die
By the line that he drew with his sword when the battle was nigh
Any man that will fight to the death, cross over
But if you want to live, you better fly
And over the line went hundred and seventy-nine

Chorus
Hey rise up Santa Anna, we’re killing your soldiers below
So the rest of Texas would know
And remember the Alamo
Remember the Alamo
Old Bowie lay dying, his powder was ready and dry
Flat on his back Bowie killed him a few in reply
And young Davy Crockett was singin’ and laughin’
The gallantry fierce in his eye
For God and for freedom, a man more than willing to die
They sent a young scout from the battlements bloody and loud
Sent the words of farewell from a garrison valiant and proud
Breathe not little darling my dying
If Texas is sovereign and free
We’ll never surrender and ever with liberty be

Paradise
When I was a child, my family would travel
Down to western Kentucky where my parents were born
And there’s a backwards old town, that’s often remembered
So many times, that my memories are worn

Chorus
And Daddy won’t you take me back to Muhlenberg County
Down by the Green River where Paradise lay?
Well I’m sorry my son, but you’re too late in asking
Mister Peabody’s coal train has hauled it away
Well sometimes we’d travel right down the Green River
To the abandoned old prison down by Adrie Hill
Where the air smelled like snakes, and we’d shoot with our pistols
But empty pop bottles was all we would kill
Then the coal company came with the world’s largest shovel
And they tortured the timber and stripped all the land
Well, they dug for the coal till the land was forsaken
Then they wrote it all down as the progress of man
When I die, let my ashes flow down the Green River
Let my soul roll on up to the Rochester Dam
I’ll be halfway to heaven with Paradise waitin’
Just five miles away from wherever I am

Crawdad
You get a line and I get a pole, honey
You get a line and I get a pole, babe
You get a line and I’ll get a pole
We’ll all go down to the crawdad hole
Honey, sugar baby, mine
What you gonna do when the well runs dry, honey …
Gonna let them crawdad sit and die
Honey, sugar baby, mine
Look at that crawdad crawlin’ round, honey …
He’s the mayor of the Crawdad Town …
Honey, sugar baby, mine
I heard the duck say to the drake, honey …
There ain’t no crawdads in this lake
Honey, sugar baby, mine
Crawdad sittin’ on the river bank, hone
Pickin’ his teeth with a two by four plank
Honey, sugar baby, mine

Mountain Dew

Chorus
They call it that good old mountain dew
And them that refuse are few
You hush up your mug, and I’ll fill up your jug
With that good old mountain dew
My Uncle Bill has a still on the hill
Where he brews up a gallon or two
There are buzzards in the sky
And they like to get high
On that good old mountain dew
My Aunty June had brand new perfume
It had such a sweet smelling phew (P.U.!)
Imagine her surprise when she had it analyzed
It was nothing but good old mountain dew
Mr. Roosevelt told me just how he felt
The day that the dry law went thru:
If your likker’s too red, it will swell up your head
Better stick to that good old mountain dew
Scott Weisman & Bascomb L. Lunsford

Will the Circle Be Unbroken
I was standing by my window on a cold and cloudy day
When I saw the hearse come rolling for to carry my mother away

Chorus
Will the circle be unbroken by and by, Lord, by and by?
There’s a better home a-waiting in the sky, Lord, in the sky
Lord, I told the undertaker "Undertaker, please drive slow
For this body you’re a-hauling, Lord, I hate to see her go"
I followed close behind her, tried to hold up and be brave
But I could not hide my sorrow when they laid her in the grave
Went back home, Lord, my home was lonesome, ‘cause my mother, she was gone
All my brothers, sisters cryin’, what a home, so sad and lone
One by one, the seats were emptied, one by one, they went away
Now that family, they are parted. Will they meet again someday?

Last Night I had the Strangest Dream
Last night I had the strangest dream
I’d ever dreamed before
I dreamed the world had all agreed
To put an end to war
I dreamed I saw a mighty room
Filled with women and men
And the paper they were signing said
They’d never fight again
And when the paper was all signed
And a million copies made
They all joined hands and bowed their heads
And grateful prayers were prayed
And the people in the streets below
Were dancing round and round
While guns ands swords and uniforms
Were scattered on the ground

Everglades
He was born and raised around Jacksonville
A nice young man, not the kind to kill
But a jealous plan and a flashing blade
Sent him on the run through the Everglades
Running like a dog through the Everglades
Now the posse went in and they came back out
Said he’ll die and there ain’t no doubt
It’s an eye for an eye, so the debt is paid
He won’t last long in the Everglades
A man can’t live in the Everglades

Chorus
Where a man can hide and never be found
And have no fear of the baying hound
But he better keep a-movin’ and don’t stand still
If the skeeters don’t get him, then the gators will
Now the years went by and his girl was wed
His family gave him up for dead
But now and then, the natives would say
They seen him runnin’ through the Everglades
Running like a dog through the Everglades
Now he never heard the news on the radio
He was deep in the glades so he’ll never know
His roaming and hiding didn’t make much sense
The jury had ruled it was self defense
Running like a dog through the Everglades
Running like a dog through the Everglades
Zipping like a frog through the slimy bog
Running through the trees from the Everleys
H. Howard

Tom Dooley

Chorus
Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Hang down your head and cry
Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Poor boy you’re bound to die
I met her on the mountain and there I took her life
I met her on the mountain and stabbed her with my knife
Hand me down my banjo, I’ll pick it on my knee
This time tomorrow it’ll be no use to me
This time tomorrow, reckon where I’ll be?
If it hadn’t been for Grayson, I’d be in Tennessee
This time tomorrow, reckon where I’ll be?
Down in some lonesome valley, a-hangin’ on a white oak tree

Won’t you write me a letter
Won’t you give me a call

Bewildered, Bewildered (or substitute)

You are what you are
And you ain’t what you ain’t
So listen up Buster
And listen up good
Stop wishing for bad luck
And knocking on wood

My wife hollers at me
And my kids are all freaks
Every side I get up on
Is the wrong side of bed
If it weren't so expensive
I'd wish I were dead

But my stomach makes noises
Whenever I kiss
My girlfriend tells me
It’s all in my head
But my stomach tell me
To write you instead

That me and my girlfriend
Would ever get caught

Roll in My Sweet Baby’s Arms
Ain’t going to work on the railroad
Ain’t going to work on the farm
Gonna lay round the shack
Til the mail train comes back
Then I’ll roll in my sweet baby’s arms

Chorus
Roll in my sweet baby’s arms
Roll in my sweet baby’s arms
Lay around the shack
Til the mail train comes back
Then I’ll roll in my sweet baby’s arms
Can’t see what’s the matter with my own true love
She done quit writing to me
She must think I don’t love her like I used to
Ain’t that a foolish idea?
Sometimes there’s change in the ocean
Sometimes there’s change in the sea
Sometimes there’s change in my own true love
But there’s never no change in me
Mama’s a ginger cake baker
Sister can weave and spin
Dad’s got an interest in that cotton mill
Just, watch that old money roll in
They tell me that your parents do not like me
They have drove me away from your door
If I had all my time to do over
I would never go there any more
Now where was you last Friday night
While I was locked up in jail?
Walking the streets with another man
Wouldn’t even go my bail

Greenback Dollar
Some people say I’m a no-count
Others say I’m no good
But I’m just a natural-born travellin’ man
Doing what I think I should, oh yeah
Doing what I think I should

Chorus
And I don’t give a damn about a greenbacked dollar
Spend it fast as I can
For a wailing song and a good guitar
The only things that I understand, oh yeah
The only things that I understand, poor boy

When I was a little baby
My mama said, "Hey son"
Travel where you will
And grow to be a man
And sing what must be sung, poor boy
Sing what must be sung
Now that I’m a grown man
I’ve traveled here and there
I learned that a bottle of brandy and a song

Dead Skunk in the Middle of the Road
Crossing the highway late last night
He shoulda looked left and he shoulda looked right
He didn't see the station wagon car
The skunk got squashed and there you are

Chorus
You got your dead skunk in the middle of the road
Dead skunk in the middle of the road
Dead skunk in the middle of the road
(And it's) Stinking to high heaven
Take a whiff on me, that ain't no rose
Roll up your window and hold your nose
You don't have to look and you don't have to see
'Cause you can feel it in your olfactory
Yeah, you got your dead cat and you got your dead dog
On a moonlit night you got your dead toad frog
You got your dead rabbit and your dead raccoon
The blood and the guts, they gonna make you swoon
C'mon, stink
You got it, it's dead, it's in the middle
Dead skunk in the middle
Dead skunk in the middle of the road
Stinking to high heaven
All over the road

The Battle of New Orleans
In 18 and 14 we took a little trip
Along with Colonel Jackson down the mighty Mississip’
We took a little bacon and we took a little beans
And met the bloody British near the town of New Orleans

Chorus
We fired our guns and the British kept a-comin’
There wasn’t nigh as many as they was a while ago
We fired once more and they commenced a-runnin’
On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico
Well I see’d Marse Jackson a-walkin’ down the street
And a-talkin’ to a pirate by the name of Jean Lafitte
He gave Jean a drink that he’d brung from Tennessee
And the pirate said he’d help us drive the British in the sea
Well the French told Andrew "You had better run
Cuz Packenham’s a-comin’ with a bullet in his gun"
Old Hickory said he didn’t give a damn
He’s gonna whip the britches off of Colonel Packenham"
We looked down the river and we seed the British come
There must have been a hundred of ‘em beatin’ on the drum
They stepped so high and made their bugles ring
While we stood beside our cotton bales and didn’t say a thing
Old Hick’ry said we’d take ‘em by surprise
If we didn’t fire a musket till we looked ‘em in the eyes
We held our fire til we seen their faces well
Then we opened up our squirrel guns and really gave ‘em hell

Chords as in chorus
Well they ran thru the briars and they ran thru the brambles
And they ran thru the bushes where a rabbit couldn’t go
They ran so fast that the hounds couldn’t catch ‘em
On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico
They lost their pants and their pretty shiny coats
And their tails were all a-showin’ like a bunch of billy goats
They ran down the river til their tongues were hangin’ out
And they said they got a lickin’ which there wasn’t any doubt
Well we went back to town in our dirty ragged pants
And we danced all night with them pretty girls from France
We couldn’t understand ‘em but they had the sweetest charms
And we understood ‘em better when we got ‘em in our arms
Well the guide who brung the British from the sea
Came a-limpin’ into camp just as sick as he could be
He said the dyin’ words of Colonel Packenham
Was "You’d better quit your foolin’ with your cousin Uncle Sam"
Well we’ll march back home but we’ll never be content
Until we make Old Hickory the Peoples’ President
And every time we think about the bacon and the beans
We’ll think about the fun we had way down in New Orleans
Jimmy Driftwood

We're finally on our own

How can you run when you know?
Gotta get down to it

Monkey and the Engineer
Once upon a time there was an engineer
Drove a locomotive both far and near
Accompanied by a monkey that would sit on a stool
Watching everything the engineer would do
One day the engineer wanted a bite to eat
He left the monkey sitting on the driver's seat
The monkey pulled the throttle the locomotive jumped the gun
And did 80 miles an hour down the mainline run

Chorus
Big locomotive right on time
Big locomotive coming down the line
Big locomotive Number 99
Left the engineer with a worried mind
The engineer called up the dispatcher on the phone
To tell him all about his locomotive was gone
Dispatcher got on the wire switch operator to the right
Cause the monkey's got the main line sewed up tight
The switch operator got the message on time
Said there's a Northbound livin' on the same main line
Open up the switch, I'm gonna let him through the hole
Cause the monkey's got the locomotive under control

Cortez the Killer
He came dancing across the water
With his galleons and guns
Looking for the new world
In that palace in the sun
On the shore lay Montezuma
With his coca leaves and pearls
In his halls he often wondered
With the secrets of the worlds
And his subjects gathered 'round him
Like the leaves around a tree
In their clothes of many colors
For the angry gods to see
And the women all were beautiful
And the men stood straight and strong
They offered life in sacrifice
So that others could go on
Hate was just a legend
And war was never known
The people worked together
And they lifted many stones
They carried them to the flatlands
And they died along the way
But they built up with their bare hands
What we still can't do today
And I know she's living there
And she loves me to this day
I still can't remember when
Or how I lost my way
He came dancing across the water
Cortez, Cortez
What a killer

Small Town
Well I was born in a small town
And I live in a small town
Prob'ly die in a small town
Oh, those small communities
All my friends are so small town
My parents live in the same small town
My job is so small town
Provides little opportunity
Educated in a small town
Taught the fear of Jesus in a small town
Used to daydream in that small town
Another boring romantic that's me
But I've seen it all in a small town
Had myself a ball in a small town
Married an L.A. darling and brought her to this small town
Now she's small town just like me
Now I cannot forget where it is that I come from
I cannot forget the people who love me
Yeah, I can be myself here in this small town
And people let me be just what I want to be
Got nothing against a big town
Still hayseed enough to say
Look who's in the big town
But my bed is in a small town
Oh, and that's good enough for me
Well I was born in a small town
And I can breath in a small town
Gonna die in this small town
And that's prob'ly where they'll bury me

Pink Houses
There's a black man with a black cat
Livin' in a black neighborhood
He's got an interstate running through his front yard
You know, he thinks he's got it so good
And there's a woman in the kitchen
Cleanin' up the evening slop
And he looks at her and says, "Hey darlin',
I can remember when you could stop a clock"

Chorus
Oh, but ain't that America, for you and me!
Oh, but ain't that America, somethin' to see, baby!
Oh, but ain't that America, home of the free!
Yeah, little pink houses for you and me
Oh-- yeah, for you and me
Well there's a young man in a T-shirt
List'nin' to a rockin' rollin' station
He's got greasy hair and a greasy smile that says
"Lord, this must be my destination"
'Cause they told me when I was younger
"Boy, you gonna be President"
But just like ev'rything else, those old crazy dreams
Just kinda came and went
Well there's people and more people
What do they know?
Got to work in some high rise
And vacation down at the Gulf of Mexico
And there's winners and there's losers
But they ain't no big deal
'Cause the simple man, baby, pays for the thrills
The bills, and the pills that kill

A Horse With No Name
On the first part of the journey
I was looking at all the life
There were plants and birds and rocks and things
There was sand and hills and rings
The first thing I met was a fly with a buzz
And the sky with no clouds
The heat was hot and the ground was dry
But the air was full of sound

Chorus
I've been through the desert on a horse with no name
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert you can remember your name
'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain
La, la...(11 times)
La, la...(11 times)

After two days in the desert sun
My skin began to turn red
After three days in the desert fun
I was looking at a river bed
And the story is told of a river that flowed
Made me sad to think it was dead

After nine days I let the horse run free
'Cause the desert had turned to sea
There were plants and birds and rocks and things
There was sand and hills and rings
The ocean is a desert with its life underground
And a perfect disguise above
Under the cities lies a heart made of ground
But the humans will give no love

Sandman
Ain't it foggy outside
All the planes have been grounded
Ain't the fire inside
Let's all go stand around it

Chorus
Funny, I've been there
And you been here
And we ain't had no time to drink that beer
'Cause I understand
You've been running from the man
That goes by the name of the sandman
He flies the sky
Like an eagle in the eye
Of a hurricane that's abandoned

Ain't the years gone by fast
I suppose you have missed them
Oh, I almost forgot to ask
Did you hear of my enlistment

Take It Easy
Well I'm a-running down the road
Trying to loosen my load
I've got seven woman on my mind
Four that wanna own me
Two that wanna stone me
One says she's a friend of mine

Take it easy, take it easy
Don't let the sound of your own wheels
Drive you crazy
Lighten up while you still can
Don't even try to understand
Just find a place to make your stand
And take it easy

Well I'm standing on the corner in Winslow, Arizona
And such a fine sight to see
It's a girl, my lord, in a flatbed Ford
Slowing down to take a look at me
Come on baby, don't say maybe
I gotta know if your sweet love is gonna save me
We may lose, and we may win
Though we will never be here again
So open up I'm climbing in
So take it easy

Well I'm a-running down the road
Trying to loosen my load
Got a world of trouble on my mind
Looking for a lover who won't blow my cover
She's so hard to find

Take it easy, take it easy
Don't let the sound of your own wheels make you crazy
Come on baby, don't say maybe
I gotta know if your sweet love is gonna save me

Oh we got it easy, we oughta take it easy

Walk on the Wild Side
Holly came from Miami, F-L-A
Hitchhiked her way across the U-S-A
Plucked her eyebrows on the way
Shaved her legs and then he was a she
She says hey babe, take a walk on the wild side
Said hey honey, take a walk on the wild side

Candy came from out on the Island
In the back room she was everybody's darlin'
But she never lost her head
Even when she was givin' head
She says hey babe, take a walk on the wild side
Said hey babe, take a walk on the wild side

And the colored girls go
Doo, doo doo, doo doo, doo doo doo
Doo, doo doo, doo doo, doo doo doo
Doo, doo doo, doo doo, doo doo doo
Doo, doo doo, doo doo, doo doo doo
Doo, doo doo, doo doo, doo doo doo
Doo, doo doo, doo doo, doo doo doo
Doo, doo doo, doo doo, doo doo doo
Doo, doo doo, doo doo, doo doo doo, doo

Little Joe never once gave it away
Everybody had to pay and pay
A hustle here and a hustle there
New York City's the place where
They said hey babe, take a walk on the wild side
They said hey Joe, take a walk on the wild side

Sugar plum fairy came and hit the streets
Lookin' for soul food and a place to eat
Went to the Apollo
You should have seen him go go go
They said hey Sugar, take a walk on the wild side
I said hey babe, take a walk on the wild side
All right, huh

Jackie is just speedin' away
Thought she was James Dean for a day
Then I guess she had to crash

You Can't Always Get What You Want
I saw her today at the reception
A glass of wine in her hand
I knew she would meet her connection
At her feet was a footloose man

Chorus
Now, you can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
But if you try sometimes you'll find
You'll get what you need

I went down to the demonstration
To get my fair share of abuse
Singing "we're gonna vent our frustrations
If we don't we're gonna blow a 50-amp fuse"

I went down to the Chelsea drugstore
To get your prescription filled
I was standing in line with Mr. Jimmy
And man, did he look pretty ill

We decided that we would have a soda
My favorite flavor, cherry red
I sung my song to Mr. Jimmy
And he said one word to me, and that was "dead"
I said to him…

I saw her today at the reception
In her glass was a bleeding man
She was practiced at the art of deception
Well I could tell by her bloodstained hands

The Unicorn
A long time ago, when the Earth was green
There was more kinds of animals than you've ever seen
And they ran about and played while the Earth was being born
And the loveliest of all was the unicorn
There was green alligators and long-necked geese
Some humpty backed camels and some chimpanzees
Some cats and rats and elephants, but sure as you're born
The loveliest of all was the unicorn
The Lord seen some sinning and it caused Him pain
And He said, "Stand back, I'm going to make it rain!"
He said, "Hey, Brother Noah, I'll tell you what to do
Go and build me a floating zoo,
And take some…

Chorus
Green alligators and long-necked geese
Some humpty backed camels and some chimpanzees
Some cats and rats and elephants, but sure as you're born
Don't you forget my unicorns
Old Noah was there to answer the call
He finished up the ark just as the rain started to fall
Then he marched in the animals two by two
And he called out as they came through
Hey Lord, I've got green alligators and long-necked geese
Some humpty backed camels and some chimpanzees
Some cats and rats and elephants, but Lord, I'm so forlorn,
I just can't find no unicorns!
And Noah looked out through the driving rain
Them unicorns were hiding, playing silly games
Kicking and splashing while the rain was pourin'
Oh, them silly unicorns!
There was green alligators and long-necked geese
Some humpty backed camels and some chimpanzees
Noah cried, "Close the door because it's starting to storm
And we just can't wait for those unicorns"
The ark started moving, it drifted with the tide,
The unicorns looked up from the rocks and they cried
And the waters came down and sort of floated them away,
That's why you never see unicorns to this very day
You'll see some green alligators and long-necked geese,
Lots of humpty backed camels and some chimpanzees
Some cats and rats and elephants, but sure as you're born
You're never gonna see a unicorn!

The Sunday School Song

Chorus
Young folks, old folks, everybody come
Come join the Sunday School and have a lot of fun
Please check your chewing gum and razors at the door
And we'll tell you Bible stories that you've never heard before
The world was made in six days and finished on the seventh
According to the contract, it should have been the 'leventh
But the painters wouldn't paint and the workers wouldn't work
(But the carpenters got lazy and the masons wouldn't work)
So the cheapest way to finish it was fill it in with dirt
The Lord made the ocean and then He made the sky
Then He made the moon and hung it out to dry
Then He made the stars out of whites of people's eyes
And when He had 'em finished He just tacked 'em in the skies
The Lord made Satan and Satan made sin
The Lord made a cubby-hole to put Satan in
Satan got huffy and he said he wouldn't stay
So he's been a little Devil ever since that day
Adam was the first man that ever was invented
He lived all alone and never was contented
(He lived all his life and never was contented)
Made out of mud in days gone by,
And hung out on a picket fence in the sun to dry
Adam was a gardener, and Eve she was his spouse
They got the sack for stealing fruit and went to keeping house
They lived a very quiet life, and peaceful in the main
Until they had a baby and started raising Cain
Adam was a gardener and Eve was his spouse
Caught at stealing apples, they started keeping house
Their married life was happy and pleasant in the main,
Until they had a little son, and started raising Cain
Adam was a prophet, first one that we know
In a place called Eden, he helped things to grow
Adam served the Lord by following His ways
We are his descendants in the latter days
Cain raised potatoes and he peddled them in town
Abel called him "Hayseed" every time he came around
Cain laid a stick of wood on brother Abel's head,
And when he took the stick away he found poor Abel dead
Enoch was a prophet, he taught what was good
People in his city did just what they should
When they were so righteous that there was no sin
Heavenly Father took them up to live with him
Noah was a prophet called to preach the word
Tried to cry repentance, but nobody heard
They were busy sinning - Noah preached in vain
They wished they had listened when they saw the rain
Noah was a carpenter who stumbled in the dark
He picked up a hammer and built himself an ark
In came the animals, two by two
All except for the worms, and they came in the apples
Noah was the keeper of the Asiatic Zoo
He built an ocean liner when he hadn't much to do
One day he got excited when the sky was getting dark
So he gathered all the animals and put them in the ark
For forty days and forty nights it rained and blew
The water covered up the land and all the mountains too
When Noah got to wondering just where he was at
The old ark ran aground on top of Ararat
Abraham the prophet prayed to have a son
So the Lord sent Isaac as the chosen one
Isaac begat Jacob, known as Israel
Jacob's sons were twelve tribes, so the Bible tells
Moses was a prophet sent to Israel
He would lead them to the promised land to dwell
They were slow to follow, or so it appears
They were in the wilderness for forty years
Samuel was a prophet chosen as a boy
Hannah promised God her son would serve with joy
In the tabernacle, Samuel heard his name;
He was called by God and answered "Here I am!"
Lot's wife was a woman who was mighty curious
If she wasn't in the know, she'd always raise a fuss
One day while leaving town, her curiosity made her halt
When she turned to look she turned into a block of salt
Esau was a cowboy of a wild and woolly make
His father left him half the farm, and half to brother Jake
Esau was no farmer, and he thought he'd fly the coop
So he traded it for pottage; that's a fancy name for soup
Joseph was a shepherd lad, so Bible stories tell us
His father gave him such a coat, it made his brothers jealous
They sold him into Egypt for a small consideration
Where he made a major fortune on a grain speculation
Joseph was a shepherd boy, he kept his father's goats
His father used to dress him in the very loudest coats
His brothers, they got jealous and threw him in a well
Joseph went to Heaven, and his brothers went to
Moses was a Yiddish lad, went sailing in a skiff
Along came Pharaoh's daughter, and she gave the lad a lift
She took him to the palace and she fed him something grand,
So he led the whole caboodle out into the promised land
Pharaoh was a mighty king, the Kaiser of his day
He nagged the sons of Israel until they ran away
When he tried to follow them across the bounding main,
His entire army died, with water on the brain
Balaam was a prophet who went out to curse the band
Of Israelitish children who had come to claim the land
But on his way to do this deed, his little donkey balked
And when he kicked her in the slats, she looked at him and talked
Samson was a strong man of the good old-fashioned school;
He slew a host of Philistines with the jawbone of a mule
Then Delilah came along and filled him up with gin,
And when she'd cut off all his hair, the coppers run him in
Ruth was a gleaner and Naomi was her ma
They went into the fields to gather in the straw
Boaz came along and asked Ruth if she'd be his wife
She married him for his money and they lived a happy life
David was a shepherd lad, a fearless little chap
Along came Goliath, just a looking for a scrap
David hadn't any sword, he used a sling instead
He slung rocks at Goliath and the giant fell down dead
David played the lyre and he played it rather sweet
He used to play before King Saul, the while the king would eat
But the king was fond of ragtime, which David couldn't play
So the king bought a phonograph, and sent poor Dave away
King David and King Solomon lived very merry lives
With many, many lady friends and many, many wives
When old age came upon them with all its many qualms
King Solomon wrote the Proverbs and King David wrote the Psalms
Solomon was a wise man, he had a lot of cash
Queen of Sheba came along and Solly made a mash
I guess he thought that royalty was rather underpaid
For he took to writing proverbs though he was a king by trade
Elijah was a prophet who attended county fairs
He advertised his business with a troop of dancing bears
He sold assorted prophecies, and every afternoon,
He ascended up to Heaven in a patent fire balloon
Jonah was an emigrant, so goes this Bible tale
He booked a steerage passage on a transatlantic whale
Jonah in the belly of the whale felt quite compressed
So he pushed a little button and the whale did the rest
Jonah was a prophet, tried to run away,
But he later learned to listen and obey
When we really try, the Lord won't let us fail
That's what Jonah learned deep down inside the whale
Daniel was a courtier who wouldn't mind the king
The king said he couldn't stand for any such a thing
He chucked him in a manhole with lions down beneath
But Daniel was a dentist and he pulled the lions' teeth
Daniel was a prophet He refused to sin
So the king threw Daniel in the lion's den
Angels calmed the lions, and the king soon saw
Daniel's pow'r was great, for he obeyed God's law
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego,
Disobeyed the king, and so they had to go (and told him where to go)
He threw them in a furnace, to burn 'em up like chaff,
But they wore asbestos BVD's and gave the king a laugh
Salome was a chorus girl who danced the hoochie kootch
She caused quite a scandal 'cause she didn't wear too "mooch"
The king said "Salome, we will have no scandal here"
Salome said, "The devil!" and she kicked the chandelier
Ahab had a lovely wife, whose name was Jezebel
While looking out the window, to the dogs below she fell
"She's gone to the dogs", the people told the king
Ahab said he never heard of such a dog-gone thing
Samson was a strong man of Jeffrey Johnson's School
Had the strength of a thousand Philistines (men) and the jawbone of a mule
Along came Delilah, cut off his curly locks
So the only strength that Samson had was in his dirty socks
